Serpentine swimmers break the ice

The weather in the UK today isnt getting any better, but over in Serpentine in London a group of regular swimmers are breaking the ice to continue swimming, literally taking the plunge.

Swimming in this type of water can be dangerous to those who are unprepared, however those that swim in it daily claim that there are a number of serious benefits such as a reduced liklihood of catching colds.

Ban on High-Tech Swimsuits for the US

The US governing body for competitive swimming has introduced an almost immediate ban on high-tech swimsuits, which has been seen to give wearers an unfair advantage over fellow swimmers not in high-tech swimsuits. This follows the ban by FINA which is expected to take place in January.

FINA Swimwear Approval – Part 2

As I am sure you are aware, FINA have recently confirmed new rules and regulations for competition swimwear which will be effective from January 2010. The initial draft of these regulations has now been released and we expect to receive the final detailed publication in coming weeks.

The salient points within the new rules are:

The amount of body coverage provided by suits will be limited (navel to knee for men and shoulder to knee for women.)
Suits will not be permitted to use zippers or any fasteners.
Non-permeable materials like polyurethane will be outlawed.

We will keep you updated with further developments.

FINA Swimwear Approval – Part 1

As you may be aware, FINA, swimmings governing body will be banning full-body polyurethane suits from 2010. There has been much controversy and debate over the ban.

As it stands at the moment we can’t tell you which exact suits will be banned. However, this should give you a better idea of what to expect when the ban comes into action; Click here for the rules following the conditions for swimwear approval.

Fina the governing body for competition swimming is responding to criticisms about the new range of high tech body suits such as the Speedo LZR racer which some say offers swimmers an unfair advantage over conventional suits.

They are restricting these new suits by issuing new rules which which restrict body coverage, buoyancy levels and the actual materials used. They are also putting a stop to custom suits for individual athletes.

These new rules have come into effect 13 months after the launch of Speedo LZR racer which has currently set 108 world records. Not surprising then that they are changing the rules.

Have a long term plan - Don't expect great things overnight. Work at it over a year or so.
Work on your weaknesses - Working on your weakness as well as working with your strengths will make you a more competent swimmer overall, don't just do what your good at.
Set targets - A great way to train is to set yourself a challenge that is just outside of your current reach, then with a little work you can get to this target.
You are what you eat - Remember that your performance is directly related to what you eat, ensure you are fully hydrated and have eat a healthy diet, this will boost your performance.
Overworking yourself - overworking yourself is one of the worst things you can, take it easy to begin with and build up. There's no point pushing yourself at the begging of the week only to under perform for the rest of the week.

Aspire Charity Channel Swim

Aspire is a charity that works with people with a spinal cord injury to create opportunity, choice and independence.Aspires national services and programmes include adapted housing for people leaving hospital if houses aren’t yet accessible, specialist computer equipment, independent living officers who provide direct support and advice for people recently injured and the Human Needs Fund which people can apply to for funding for specialist equipment. Aspire ensures that everyone with a spinal cord injury has the opportunity to live an independent and fulfilled life.

Aspires are currently preparing for their annual Aspire Channel Swim. The Swim will take place from September 15^th-December 7^th and is a 22 mile swim (the distance of the channel) across 12 weeks in the comfort of your own swimming pool. Last year the swim raised £345,000 with 7,000 people taking part nationwide.

Swimming Gala - A Success

We recently represented Simply Swim at the Herne Bay Swimming Club Swim Gala, held at the Kingsmead Swimming Pool. The day went very well with swimwear, goggles, swim caps and lots more being sold to the budding olympic champions! It was an invaluable experience and we gained lots of insight into which styles of swimwear and equipment the swimmers prefer.

We also made one lad's day by donating the top raffle prize of a Speedo FSII Raze Speed Jammer. This was won by 12 year old Jake Davies of Thanet Swim Club, who can be seen with Julie from Simply Swim and the chairman of Herne Bay Swimming Club shown in the image below.

Sea Swimming either for training or just for a bit of fun is a great form of exercise, although can be quite dangerous if your not properly prepared, we at Simply Swim are therefore supplying these tips for first time Sea swimmers.

Top tips for Sea Swimming:

Learn to swim (Obviously)
If you can swim near a lifeguard
Never swim alone
Don't dive into unknown water
Be sure the conditions are suitable for swimming. Check the current
If you are unable to swim out of a strong current, Signal for help immediately
Rely on your swimming ability rather than a flotation device
Read and obey all beach safety signs
Supervise children closely, even when lifeguards are present
If caught in a rip current, swim sideways until free, don't swim against the current's pull
Alcohol and swimming don't mix
Protect your head, neck, and spine -- don't dive into unfamiliar waters -- feet first, first time
If you are in trouble, call or wave for help
Follow regulations and lifeguard directions
Swim parallel to shore if you wish to swim long distances
Scuba dive only if trained and certified -- and within the limits of your training

To preserve the life of your goggles and keep them in good condition we recommend you follow these rules.

Always rinse your goggles off in cold water to remove any chlorine or salt.
Allow to dry in a warm and hygienic environment.
Do not store or leave out in direct sunlight as this could cause the silicone to dry.
Never rub the inside of the lenses as this could cause scratches.
Consider purchasing a goggle pouch to provide additional protection.

Which lens colour?

Are you confused with the range of lens colours that are available? Different lens colours are designed to perform under different light conditions. Which provides you the best vision on the day, whatever the light.

Amber Lens

An Amber lens provides excellent vision in both high and low light environments. In low level light (indoor swimming pool etc) amber lenses amplify the light meaning clearer vision. In high light levels (bright sunshine, outdoors etc) they reduce glare which also helps to provide better vision. Ideal goggle for all environments.

Clear Lens

Clear lens provides a natural light, which makes it ideal for low light, overcast conditions where maximum visibility is required. Clear lens is also ideal for consistent lighting as it provides accurate vision without filtering out colour. Ideal for indoor pools and dark conditions.

Blue / Violet Lens

These colours are designed to allow a moderate level of light into the eye but they still provide some protection from glare. Its a practical colour for changing conditions. Ideal for everyday events and training.

Smoke Lens

Dark lenses provide protection from high light levels (direct sunshine and bright conditions). They have the same principles as sun glasses. Ideal for swimming out in the Sun.

Which goggle is right for you?
The trick to getting a good pair of goggles is selecting a model that fits your face and your eyes, and of course makes you look the business in the water! This three-step system should ensure you find your perfect match for the water.

Step 1 - Seal
To test the fit you should firstly apply the goggle to the face without the strap in place and test the seal the goggle provides. If a split second of suction is provided then you have a strong indication of a good fit (careful of those eye balls though, our goggles are known to have awesome suction!)

Myth: Tightening the strap will ensure your goggles give a good fit.
Fact: The goggle straps sole purpose is to hold the goggle in position, not to provide the seal. Adjustment of the strap may be necessary, however avoid the temptation to pull the strap too tight, this will simply create uncomfortable pressure on the delicate eye area, not to mention unsightly panda eye effect!

Step 2 - Fit
Once you have found a good seal you should fit the headstrap by careful adjustment and then focus on two area:
• Comfort around the nosebridge, the goggle should sit comfortably around the nose and create a good seal.
• Seal around the eye should sit comfortably and not wrap too far around the corner of the eye. This can be tricky to gauge so ask our ‘Goggle doctors’ to assist you with this and use the mirrors provided to check for gaps.

Step 3 – Style

Check how you look in a mirror!
We always recommend trying 2-3 different models, this will help you compare fit, comfort and validate your purchase decision.

Advanced Fabrics From Simply Swim

If you regularly swim you will know that swim suits do fade and bag due to the chlorine in the water. To combat this, manufacturers like Speedo and Zoggs have released swim suit ranges that are much more resistant to fading and bagging, which means they look better for longer.

Endurance from Speedo, chlorine resistant fabric will not degrade and is 20 more colour resistant than any other conventional elastane swimwear currently on the market. It has been designed to help give an improved fit and comfort to the swimmer, with a softer feel and more superior shape retention.
